Jujutsu Kaisen grabbed a lot of headlines in 2023. The blockbuster show's second season was an absolute rollercoaster of action, gore and more shocking twists than most anime manage in their entire runs.
Luckily for fans, Jujutsu Kaisen season three was officially confirmed after the season two finale.
It wasn't all good, though, as behind-the-scenes issues plagued the show's production and caused harm and stress to its creative team. Despite these problems, the animators of Jujutsu Kaisen season two's explosive Shibuya Incident arc delivered exceptional fight scenes, jaw-dropping moments, and major cliffhangers every week.
So the question remains: How do you follow up on that? Let's take a look at what might be coming next.
Jujutsu Kaisen season 3 release date: When will it come out?
Jujutsu Kaisen season three was confirmed via a small teaser after the second season finale aired. The teaser also confirmed the story will continue by adapting the manga's Culling Game arc, but we don't have any news of a release date quite yet.
There were a little over two years between the end of season one (March 2021) and the beginning of season two (July 2023), so we'd be surprised to see Jujutsu Kaisen return any earlier than 2025.
In between season one and season two, we did get the prequel Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which served mostly as a standalone where fans finally got to meet Yuta Okkotsu and learn about his troubled past.
Just as the prequel was a welcomed season-hiatus surprise, we're keeping our fingers crossed that we'll see Yuji Itadori and co. back on the big screen perhaps even before the season three release.
Jujutsu Kaisen season 3 studio and voice cast: Who's in season 3?
Jujutsu Kaisen's cast will probably be much the same for a third season, although there will be some noticeable differences.
We can assume that Satoru Gojo will not be heavily featured, since he's still very much trapped in the prison realm. We also don't necessarily know the state we'll find Nobara Kugisaki in, after her run-in with Mahito.
And, of course, we said goodbye to several supporting cast members during the Shibuya Incident – the biggest tragedy being the death of Kento Nanami, aka the internet's husband and all-round gallant good guy.
Discussing Nanami's death during an interview with GameRant, Yuji Itadori voice actor Adam McArthur said he thought it was "beautiful" how the show handled it. "We got to live in the moment, which is pretty courageous of them as storytellers and as animators," he said.
As for Nobara's fate, he continued: "But as far as shocking goes, there were two things in that scene with Nobara that really stood out to me. One of them was the sound effects that they used when she fell back towards the camera, like the thud. And, there was a POV shot through her eye. It's so cool that they don't shy away from making us really feel uncomfortable."
With that in mind, here's who we are expecting to see back for Jujutsu Kaisen season three:
- Yuji Itadori – Junya Enoki (Japanese); Adam McArthur (English)
- Yuta Okkotsu - Megumi Ogata (Japanese); Kayleigh McKee (English)
- Megumi Fushiguro – Yuma Uchida (Japanese); Robbie Daymond (English)
- Nobara Kugisaki – Asami Seto (Japanese); Anne Yatco (English)
- Maki Zen'in – Mikako Komatsu (Japanese); Allegra Clark (English)
- Toge Inumaki – Kōki Uchiyama (Japanese); Xander Mobus (English)
- Panda – Tomokazu Seki (Japanese); Matthew David Rudd (English)
- Satoru Gojo – Yūichi Nakamura (Japanese); Kaiji Tang (English)
- Kiyotaka Ijichi – Mitsuo Iwata (Japanese); Chris Tergliafera (English)
- Shoko Ieiri – Aya Endō (Japanese); Ryan Bartley (English)
Jujutsu Kaisen season 3 plot: What happens next?
Jujutsu Kaisen season three's short teaser trailer confirmed that the next story to be adapted will be the Culling Game Arc.
Without spoiling too much for anime-only fans, the story deals with the immediate aftermath of the Shibuya Incident and will focus heavily on Yuta Okkotsu. Viewers saw Okkotsu return in a badass scene in the final moments of the season two finale, where we also found out he'll be heading up the charge to execute Yuji for his supposed crimes.
Yuta made his first appearance on screen in Jujutsu Kaisen 0, set before the events of Jujutsu Kaisen season one, and if you haven't seen it yet then the hiatus between seasons two and three might be a good time to do so. You can watch the movie dubbed and subbed on Crunchyroll and Netflix.
Fans are no doubt looking forward to being reunited with titular hero Yuji Itadori in season three, and seeing how he will react to the challenges coming his way during the Culling Game arc.
Some insight may be gleaned from creator Gege Akutami who referred to Yuji as a "flexible character", while alluding to Yuji's ability to embrace challenges with ease.
During an interview for the opening of the Jujutsu Kaisen Exhibit in Japan, Akutami said: "Itadori's versatility is in the sense that he's easy to fit into shounen-type stories, but this can also make the stories a bit bland.
"When Itadori does something straightforward, like saving someone, there's no real need for a reason behind it, so the story is easy to move forward but it also can lead to the reader not feeling much or not getting a good taste of his actions."
He went on to say that he created Yuji Itadori to be a universal character.
"My idea was to use other characters to pave a defined path and portray a universal protagonist," Akutami added. "I wanted Itadori to be a flexible character."
Yuji's desire to do what's right, no questions asked, may be the answer to him overcoming the hardships to come.
A quick text crawl, made up of five key statements, at the end of the season two finale also gave us some insight into what to expect from season three. Those statements were as follows:
1. "Suguru Geto's survival was confirmed. We hereby declare the reinstatement of his death sentence."
2. "Satoru Gojo has been deemed an accomplice in the Shibuya Incident and is hereby expelled from jujutsu society. In addition, any attempt to free him from his seal will be deemed a crime."
3. "Masamichi Yaga is sentenced to death for inciting Satoru Gojo and Suguru Geto, causing the Shibuya Incident."
4. "The suspension on Yuji Itadori's death sentence is hereby revoked, and his execution shall be carried out promptly."
5. Special-grade sorcerer Yuta Okkotsu shall be appointed as Yuji Itadori's executioner.
Yuta Okkotsu voice actor Kayleigh McKee has spoken about what fans of the show can expect, as Yuta takes on a bigger role in the next season. She said she's been preparing "for a long time" to portray this version of her character, after that initial introduction in the film.
She told GameRant: "He has matured way more, as a person, because he loves himself now. That allows him to be confident and more caring of other people.
"I've been prepping a voice for this version of Yuta for a while. And I was so happy with how it turned out. I feel like he's really found his stride."
As for what could be next for Yuta in the Culling Game Arc, McKee issued a warning to fans, saying: "Don't be too scared."
"When things are looking harrowing, you don't have to run angry to social media immediately," she added.
Jujutsu Kaisen season 3 trailer: Any Jujutsu Kaisen season 3 footage yet?
We still don't have any first-look footage of Jujutsu Kaisen season three, and we likely won't get a full trailer until closer to the release date. The show's second season released its first trailer roughly three months before it started, and we'd expect a similar lead time ahead of the third.
For now, there is just the very short teaser trailer mentioned earlier to salivate over. It is all in Japanese, so some may need to have Google Translate to hand.
Jujutsu Kaisen is available to watch on Crunchyroll.
